Set up OpenAI pixel (ChatGPT Ads)

About the OpenAI pixel

If you advertise on ChatGPT with OpenAI Ads, the OpenAI pixel shows OpenAI what shoppers do on your store after they click your ads: which products they view, what they add to cart, and which orders they complete. OpenAI uses this data to report your ad results and to deliver your ads to shoppers who are more likely to buy.
With OnePixel, you don't need to edit your theme or add any code. Paste your Pixel ID from OpenAI Ads Manager, choose the pages and events you want to track, and OnePixel handles the rest.
For more reliable tracking, you can also turn on Conversions API. It sends your store events directly from our server, so OpenAI still receives them when a shopper's browser blocks tracking. It also lets you track payment info and completed orders.

Before you start

Setup takes just a few minutes. Here's what to have ready:

  • A Professional plan or above. OpenAI tracking is available from the Professional plan. If you're on a lower plan, the Add new pixel button is locked. Click Upgrade plan to unlock it.
  • A free pixel slot. Each OpenAI pixel uses one of your plan's pixel slots. If you've used them all, upgrade your plan or remove a pixel you no longer need.
  • Your Pixel ID from OpenAI Ads Manager. To get one, create a data source in the Conversions section of Ads Manager. See OpenAI's guide: Conversion Measurement. Keep Ads Manager open in another tab so you can copy the ID over.
  • A conversion key (optional). You only need this if you want to turn on Conversions API. We'll show you where to find it in Turn on Conversions API. Conversions API isn't included in every plan. If the toggle is locked, you'll see an option to upgrade.

There's no need to sign in to your OpenAI account from OnePixel. You just paste your Pixel ID, and you're ready to go.

Add an OpenAI pixel

  1. Get your Pixel ID from OpenAI:

You don't need the code snippet that Ads Manager shows. OnePixel adds the pixel to your store for you.
a. Sign in to OpenAI Ads Manager with the OpenAI account you use for your ads.
b. Open the Conversions tab, then go to Data sources.
c. If you don't have a website data source yet, create one and give it a name (for example, your store name).
d. Copy the Pixel ID shown under your data source's name.

  1. In OnePixel, open the OpenAI card on the Dashboard.
  2. Click Add new pixel. The Add new OpenAI pixel page opens.
  3. In Name this pixel, enter a name to identify this pixel in OnePixel. You can't change the name after you save the pixel, so choose carefully.
  4. In Enter OpenAI pixel ID, paste the Pixel ID you copied from Ads Manager.
  5. Under Target, choose which pages to track. See Choose a target.
  6. Under Active events, choose which events to send. See Events you can track.
  7. (Optional) Turn on Conversions API and enter your Conversions API key. See Turn on Conversions API.
  8. Click Save. You'll see "Pixel added."

Your pixel starts tracking as soon as you save it. To check that it's working, see Test your pixel.

When you choose Collection or Tag, only these events are tracked: page_viewed, contents_viewed, and items_added. The other events disappear from the form.

Changing the target resets your event checklist to the default.

Events you can track

OnePixel uses OpenAI's event names, so the names you see in OnePixel match what you see in Ads Manager. For example, a purchase appears as order_created, not "Purchase".

page_viewed has no checkbox. It's always sent on every page load that matches your target, even if you turn off every other event.

Events that need Conversions API. add_payment_info and order_created are locked and labeled "(Conversion API Required)" until you turn on
Conversions API. When you turn it on, both events are selected and you can change them. If you turn Conversions API off again, both are cleared and locked.

Standard vs. custom events. OpenAI uses standard events to optimize campaigns, most often order_created. Custom events (search, view_category, view_cart, add_payment_info) still appear in Ads Manager, but you can't use them as conversion goals.

Reset default. Click Reset default to return the checklist to its default settings, based on whether Conversions API is on.

Choose a product ID type

For contents_viewed, items_added, view_cart, checkout_started, add_payment_info, and order_created, you can choose which ID to send for each product:

  • product_id — default for contents_viewed
  • variant_id — default for all other events

Choose the same ID type you use in your product catalog in Ads Manager, so OpenAI can match events to your products.

search and view_category don't send product IDs.

How prices are sent

OnePixel sends prices to OpenAI in the currency's smallest unit, as a whole number:

  • USD, EUR, and similar currencies: $25.99 is sent as 2599 (cents).
  • Currencies without decimals, such as JPY or VND: the amount stays the same. ¥1000 is sent as 1000.

This is expected. Your prices are correct.

Turn on Conversions API

Conversions API sends the same events from the server, with a shared event ID so OpenAI doesn't count them twice. This makes tracking more reliable when browser events are blocked or missed.

  1. Get your conversion key from OpenAI:

Make sure you copy a conversion key. An Ads API key or a platform API key won't work. The key must also belong to the same ad account as your Pixel ID.
a. In OpenAI Ads Manager, go to Conversions > Manage conversion keys.
b. Create a new conversion key, or copy one you already have.

  1. Back in OnePixel, on the pixel form, turn on Conversions API.
  2. In Conversions API key, paste your conversion key. This field is required when the toggle is on.
  3. Click Save.

When you save, OnePixel checks your key and Pixel ID with OpenAI. If the check fails, the pixel isn't saved and you'll see an error.

Your key is stored securely. It isn't added to your theme or shown on your storefront.

Click Learn more next to the toggle to read OpenAI's Conversions API documentation.

Message

What it means

What to do

Invalid conversion key error

The conversion key isn't valid.

Create a new key in Ads Manager under Conversions > Manage conversion keys and paste it again. Make sure it's a conversion key, not an Ads API key.

Key doesn't match Pixel ID error

The key is valid but belongs to a different ad account than your Pixel ID.

Use a key and a Pixel ID from the same ad account.

Invalid Pixel ID or request error

The Pixel ID or the request isn't valid.

Copy the Pixel ID from Ads Manager again and check for extra spaces or missing characters.

"Please upgrade to the Professional plan or above to use OpenAI tracking."

Your plan doesn't include OpenAI tracking.

Click Upgrade plan.

"Please upgrade your plan to add more pixels."

You've reached your plan's pixel limit.

Upgrade your plan or delete a pixel you no longer use.

OnePixel only checks your key again when you change the Pixel ID or key, or turn on Conversions API. Changing the target or events doesn't trigger a new check.

Manage your pixels

Go to the OpenAI page to see all your OpenAI pixels. Each row shows the status toggle, Name, OpenAI Pixel ID, Target, and Conversions API (Enable or Disabled). Use Filter by pixel name to find a pixel.

  • Edit a pixel: Click Edit, make your changes, and click Save. You'll see "Pixel updated." You can change everything except the pixel name.

  • Pause a pixel: Turn off the status toggle on the pixel's row. Tracking stops, but your settings are kept. Turn it back on anytime.

  • Delete a pixel: Click the delete icon, then confirm in the Delete pixel dialog. You'll see "Pixel deleted." This can't be undone.

Test your pixel

After you save your pixel, do a quick test run on your store to make sure events are reaching OpenAI. You'll check the results in OpenAI Ads Manager.

  1. Open your store in a new browser tab. If a cookie banner appears, accept it. The pixel doesn't send events until tracking is allowed.
  2. Shop like a customer: view a product, add it to your cart, and click Checkout.
  3. In OpenAI Ads Manager, go to Conversions > Event Stream and click Start polling.
  4. Look for your events, such as page_viewed, contents_viewed, items_added, and checkout_started. Browser events usually appear within a few seconds.
  5. If you turned on Conversions API, you'll also see the same events sent from the server. These can take a little longer to show up.

The Event Stream only shows a sample of events from about the last 15 minutes, so check it right after your test run. Event Stream may not be available on every Ads Manager account yet.

For where conversions show up in your ad reports over time, see OpenAI's guide: Measure Results.

Not seeing any events?

  • Is the pixel turned on? On the OpenAI page in OnePixel, check that the pixel's status toggle is on.
  • Does your target cover the page? If your target is Collection or Tag, only matching pages are tracked. Checkout events aren't tracked with these targets.
  • Did you accept cookies? If you declined or ignored the cookie banner, no events are sent. Try again in a private window and accept the banner.
  • Is the Pixel ID correct? Compare the Pixel ID in OnePixel with the one in Ads Manager, and check for extra spaces or missing characters.
  • Did you wait long enough? Give it a minute, then click Start polling again.

The OpenAI pixel follows Shopify Customer Privacy settings.

  • If a shopper hasn't consented to analytics tracking (or has declined marketing, on stores that don't use analytics consent), OnePixel doesn't send any events for that shopper, from either the browser or Conversions API.
  • If a shopper consents later on the same page, page-load events already skipped (page view, product view, search, collection, cart) aren't sent again. Add to cart and checkout events are sent if the shopper clicks after consenting.
  • When a shopper clicks a ChatGPT ad and consents, OnePixel passes the ad click information to OpenAI through Conversions API, so OpenAI can match the click with the order. This needs Conversions API turned on.

Frequently asked questions

Why don't I see "Purchase" in Ads Manager? OpenAI calls this event order_created. It's only sent when Conversions API is on.
Does the pixel track anything if I don't turn on Conversions API? Yes. The browser pixel sends all your selected events except add_payment_info and order_created, which need Conversions API.
Why does an event show a price of 2599? Prices are sent in the currency's smallest unit. For USD, 2599 means $25.99.
Can I use custom events like search or view_cart to optimize my campaign? No. Campaign optimization uses standard events, usually order_created. Custom events appear in Ads Manager for reporting only.
Can I rename a pixel? No. The name can't be changed after you save. To use a different name, create a new pixel and delete the old one.

Done! Your OpenAI pixel is now sending store events to OpenAI Ads.
