# How to fix common image errors in Google Merchant Center (Generic image)

If you're setting up a Google product feed, you might encounter the "Generic Image" error. This happens when Google determines that your product image is too generic and does not clearly showcase the main product being advertised. A generic image can lower the effectiveness of your listing and, in some cases, lead to disapproval of your products.

# 1. Understanding Errors vs. Warnings in Google Merchant Center

Before we dive into fixing this issue, it's important to understand the difference between errors and warnings:

* **Errors**: These are critical issues that can cause product disapproval, preventing your ads from appearing. Repeated or unresolved errors may even lead to account suspension.
* **Warnings**: While warnings do not immediately disapprove products, they can negatively impact performance over time if left unaddressed.

# 2. How to Fix the "Generic Image" Error

**Step 1: Review Google’s Image Guidelines**

Google has strict guidelines for product images. Make sure your images follow these best practices:

* The image should clearly display the main product being sold.
* Avoid using placeholders, illustrations, or generic symbols.
* Use high-quality images with good lighting and a clear background.
* Ensure the image is not watermarked or heavily edited.

**Step 2: Replace the Image with a More Specific One**
**Step 3: Request a Review**

* Re-submit the feed in order to be review by Google again.

# 3. How to Prevent This Issue in the Future

* Always use unique, high-quality images of your actual products.
